Quick Answer:

What should I consider when planning a kitchen remodel?

Before starting a kitchen remodel, plan your appliances, ventilation, lighting, island layout, electrical needs and clearances together. Choosing these elements early helps prevent costly changes later and creates a kitchen that looks better and works better for everyday life.

A kitchen remodel is exciting, but it also comes with a long list of decisions. Cabinets, countertops, appliances, lighting, finishes, flooring, hardware and layout all need to work together, and many of those choices are more connected than they may seem.

That is why some of the most important kitchen decisions should happen before anything is ordered or installed.

A little planning early can help your finished kitchen look better, function better and avoid frustrating surprises later. Here are several details worth thinking through before your remodel gets underway.

Start With How You Use Your Appliances

It is easy to get caught up in appliance finishes and impressive feature lists, but the best place to start is with how you use your kitchen every day.

Different households need different things from their appliances, so think about your routines before choosing specific models.

For refrigeration, consider how you shop and store food.

Do you buy groceries several times a week or stock up less often? Do you need lots of freezer space? Would flexible storage zones, adjustable shelving or additional drawers make organization easier?

French door, side-by-side, bottom freezer and four-door refrigerators all offer different advantages depending on how your household uses them.

“The main thing people are coming in asking for is that extra drawer,” explains Tom Marso, appliance department co-manager at Mahlander’s.

For dishwashers, think beyond simply getting dishes clean.

Capacity and rack configuration can make a big difference, especially if you regularly wash large pots, baking sheets, stemware or bulky items. You may also want to consider noise level, adjustable racks, third racks for utensils and small items, specialized wash cycles and drying performance. If your kitchen is open to your main living space, a quieter dishwasher may be especially valuable.

For cooking appliances, think about what and how you cook.

Do you bake often? Convection can provide more even cooking and may be especially useful for multiple racks of food.

“A lot of people don’t realize that microwave convection ovens can actually bake,” Tom says.

Do you make a lot of quick weeknight meals? Built-in air fry settings may appeal to you. Tom recently helped a busy couple select a new range. Their main concern? It must have an  air fryer. They didn’t even care what it looked like, he recalls.

If you cook with several pans at once, burner configuration and cooktop space become more important.

You may also want to explore induction, which offers fast response and precise temperature control, or decide whether a traditional gas or electric range better fits your preferences.

If you frequently cook for holidays or large gatherings, oven capacity, double ovens or additional cooking zones may matter more than they would for a smaller household.

The goal is not to find the appliance with the longest list of features. It is to find the appliance with the features that will make your kitchen work better for you.

Think About Ventilation Early

Ventilation may not be the most glamorous part of a kitchen remodel, but it can have a major impact on comfort and performance.

Range hoods and ventilation systems help remove cooking odors, smoke, grease and excess heat from the kitchen. Depending on the appliance and kitchen layout, ventilation requirements can also affect cabinetry, ductwork and electrical planning.

That means ventilation should not be treated as an afterthought.

If you are changing from a standard range to a larger professional-style model, moving your cooktop or redesigning your cabinetry, talk with your appliance specialist early about what your new setup may require.

Planning for ventilation before cabinets and appliances are installed can save a lot of headaches later.

Plan Lighting for Function and Style

Kitchen lighting has two jobs: helping you see what you are doing and helping the room feel warm, inviting and finished.

A well-designed kitchen often uses several layers of light.

  • Ambient lighting provides general illumination throughout the room.
  • Task lighting focuses light where work happens, such as over countertops, sinks and prep areas.
  • Decorative lighting, which often includes pendants and chandeliers, adds personality and helps define the style of the kitchen.
  • Under-cabinet lighting can also make a dramatic difference, particularly on work surfaces that might otherwise be shadowed by upper cabinets.

Thinking through these layers during the planning stage makes it easier to position fixtures, switches and electrical connections where they belong.

Get the Island and Pendant Lighting Working Together

The kitchen island has become one of the hardest-working areas in many homes. It may serve as a prep space, dining area, homework station, gathering spot and visual centerpiece all at once.

Because islands are often such a focal point, pendant lighting deserves careful planning.

The size of the island, ceiling height, number of fixtures and scale of each pendant all matter. Pendants that are too small can disappear visually, while fixtures that are too large or hung too low can overwhelm the space or interfere with sightlines.

You also want enough light for food preparation and everyday tasks without making the island feel overly bright.

If your remodel includes a new island, it is worth choosing your lighting while the layout is still being finalized rather than waiting until the end.

Coordinate Finishes Without Matching Everything

One of the most common kitchen design questions is whether every finish needs to match.

Thankfully, no.

Stainless steel appliances do not require stainless steel light fixtures. Black cabinet hardware does not mean every other metal in the room needs to be black.

In fact, thoughtfully mixing finishes can create a more layered and interesting space.

The key is creating some visual connection. You might repeat a warm brass finish in pendant lighting and cabinet hardware while choosing stainless steel appliances. Or you could pair matte black lighting with a black faucet while keeping other finishes softer and more neutral.

Instead of trying to match every individual element, think about how the room looks as a whole.

Pay Attention to Clearances and Everyday Movement through Your Space

A beautiful kitchen still needs to function.

Before finalizing your layout, think about what happens when appliance doors are open. Can you open the refrigerator without blocking a major walkway? Is there enough room to stand comfortably in front of the dishwasher? Can two people work in the kitchen at the same time?

Also consider where you will place frequently used items.

If the dishwasher is next to the cabinet where glasses and plates are stored, unloading becomes easier. If your main prep area is near the refrigerator, sink and trash or recycling, everyday cooking becomes more efficient.

Small layout decisions can have a surprisingly big effect on how enjoyable your kitchen is to use.

Do Not Forget the Electrical Details

Modern kitchens use a lot of electricity.

  • Small appliances, charging devices, under-cabinet lighting, refrigerators, microwaves, ranges, dishwashers and other appliances all have electrical needs.
  • If you are adding an island, changing appliance locations or upgrading to different types of appliances, your electrical plan may need to change as well.
  • Thinking about outlet placement early can also keep you from ending up with cords running across countertops or too few places to plug in the appliances you use every day.

Your contractor, electrician and appliance specialists can help make sure your plans account for the requirements of the products you choose.

Ask Questions Before You Order

One of the easiest ways to avoid remodel surprises is also one of the simplest: ask questions early.

Appliance dimensions, installation requirements, ventilation, lighting placement and fixture scale can all affect other parts of the project, and that’s why working with knowledgeable specialists can be helpful.

At Mahlander’s Appliance & Lighting, our appliance experts and lighting consultants can help you think through the details before you make your final selections. We can help you find options that fit your space, your style, and the way you live.
