A kitchen remodel is exciting, but it also comes with a long list of decisions. Cabinets, countertops, appliances, lighting, finishes, flooring, hardware and layout all need to work together, and many of those choices are more connected than they may seem.
That is why some of the most important kitchen decisions should happen before anything is ordered or installed.
Walk into a beautifully designed custom home, and there’s often something that immediately feels different. The spaces feel intentional, welcoming, and uniquely personal. While cabinetry, flooring, and architectural details all play a role, lighting is often what ties everything together.
The best part? You don’t need to build a custom home to create that same feeling
You found the perfect light fixture online. The finish looked beautiful, the style fit your vision, and you could already picture it in your home.
Then it arrived. And it wasn’t quite what you’d pictured.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
Here are five common reasons your new light fixture may look different in person.
Have you ever walked into a room and immediately thought it felt warm, inviting, and finished, even if you couldn’t quite put your finger on why?
Sometimes it’s the furniture.
Sometimes it’s the color palette or decor choices. But often, the thing tying it all together is the lighting.
Lighting has a huge impact on how a home looks and feels. But it’s also one of the easiest things to get wrong.
We see it all the time. Beautiful homes with lighting that doesn’t quite work. Fixtures that are too small. Rooms that feel dim. Spaces that could look incredible with just a few adjustments.
The good news is most lighting mistakes are easy to fix once you know what to look for.
Everything in your space works. The colors coordinate. The layout makes sense.
And yet, it still falls a little flat.
Before you start swapping furniture or rethinking your entire space, here’s what to look for — and how lighting and texture can change everything
Every year, someone declares that lighting has completely changed.
It hasn’t.
But it has evolved — and 2026 feels less about shock value and more about intention. In kitchens, dining rooms, living spaces — even bathrooms — lighting design is becoming more layered, more personal, and more refined.
If you’ve been noticing more color creeping back into interiors, you’re not imagining it. From colored glass to painted wood or metal finishes to fabric shades, color is once again part of light fixture design.
Every holiday season, the search begins: something thoughtful, something useful, something a little unexpected. The perfect gift. And while big-box stores and endless online scrolling can feel overwhelming, sometimes the best finds come from right here at home.
Step inside a local showroom like Mahlander’s during the holidays and you’ll feel it immediately — warm light, beautifully styled vignettes, ornaments tucked among the fixtures, and displays that spark ideas you didn’t even know you were looking for.
